Resumen

Introducción/objetivo: el cambio climático constituye uno de los principales desafíos ambientales contemporáneos, especialmente en contextos educativos donde se busca promover conductas orientadas a la sostenibilidad. El objetivo de este trabajo consistió en analizar la influencia del conocimiento sobre el cambio climático, la conciencia sobre el cambio climático y la percepción del riesgo climático sobre las prácticas proambientales en estudiantes universitarios mexicanos mediante un modelo de ecuaciones estructurales.

Metodología: la investigación se desarrolló con un enfoque explicativo y se empleó un diseño no experimental. La información se recopiló en un único momento temporal. La muestra estuvo integrada por 356 estudiantes universitarios mexicanos. Se aplicó un cuestionario estructurado para medir el conocimiento sobre el cambio climático, la conciencia sobre el cambio climático, la percepción del riesgo climático y las prácticas proambientales. Los datos se analizaron mediante modelado de ecuaciones estructurales (SEM), en el que se evaluaron tanto el modelo de medición como el modelo estructural.

Resultados: los resultados mostraron que el conocimiento sobre el cambio climático y la conciencia sobre el cambio climático ejercen efectos positivos y significativos sobre las prácticas proambientales, lo que confirma su importancia para explicar el comportamiento proambiental en los estudiantes universitarios. Asimismo, el conocimiento sobre el cambio climático presentó una influencia positiva y significativa sobre la percepción del riesgo climático. Sin embargo, la percepción del riesgo no mostró un efecto directo significativo sobre las prácticas proambientales, lo que sugiere que su influencia podría depender de mecanismos indirectos o de otros factores psicológicos y contextuales.

Conclusiones: los hallazgos evidencian la importancia de fortalecer tanto el conocimiento como la conciencia sobre el cambio climático en los programas de educación superior orientados a la sostenibilidad. Los resultados respaldan la utilidad de los enfoques integradores para comprender el comportamiento proambiental y, por tanto, aportan elementos que pueden orientar a las instituciones de educación superior para diseñar estrategias que faciliten y fortalezcan las prácticas sostenibles.

Abstract

Introduction/Objective: climate change represents one of the most pressing contemporary environmental challenges, particularly within educational settings where fostering sustainability-oriented behaviors has become a priority. The objective of this study was to examine the influence of climate change knowledge, climate change awareness, and climate risk perception on pro-environmental behaviors among Mexican university students using a structural equation modeling (SEM) approach.

Methodology: this study employed an explanatory, non-experimental research design. Data were collected at a single point in time from a sample of 356 Mexican university students. A structured questionnaire was administered to measure climate change knowledge, climate change awareness, climate risk perception, and pro-environmental behaviors. The data were analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM), including the assessment of both the measurement model and the structural model.

Results: the findings showed that climate change knowledge and climate change awareness had positive and statistically significant effects on pro-environmental behaviors, confirming their importance in explaining pro-environmental behavior among university students. In addition, climate change knowledge exerted a positive and statistically significant effect on climate risk perception. However, climate risk perception did not have a significant direct effect on pro-environmental behaviors, suggesting that its influence may depend on indirect mechanisms or other psychological and contextual factors.

Conclusions: the findings highlight the importance of strengthening both climate change knowledge and climate change awareness within sustainability-oriented higher education programs. The results support the value of integrative approaches for understanding pro-environmental behavior and provide evidence that can guide higher education institutions in designing strategies to promote and strengthen sustainable practices.
